This week’s photo prompt is provided by Louise with the Story Teller’s Abode. Thank you Louise!
‘What do you reckon Norm’s secret is?’ Stan rested a foot on his shovel blade.
‘Double digging,’ said Colin, not looking up from the mud.
‘We double dig every two years.’
Colin stretched his back, nodding towards Norm’s lush allotment. ‘He’s a got a good manure man, he says. Won’t say where.’
‘We get manure. Doug who runs the stables out on the main road gives us tons of the stuff. Place stinks so bad when it rains you can’t hardly breathe.’
Taking off his flat cap, Colin smoothed down his sweat soaked hair. ‘This is special he says. Special kind of horse or feed or summat.’
‘What is it – unicorn poo?’
They stood side by side, watching the easy bend and stretch of Norm’s back as he picked glossy runner beans from the vines.
Stan eyed their own scarlet buds. ‘Something not right.’
Suddenly, Norm turned, waved, sending Stan and Colin back to their tools.
I really must be more careful, thought Norm.
By his boot, the earth glittered gold.

Hehe! Reminds me of a tv show where a serial killer used the shredded bodies of her victims to grow tomatoes!

Nice! And just what I need at the allotment. Unicorn poo.

Haha! I liked the idea of it too, Tish. You’d get some marvellous runners out of it on your allotment. Mind you, your allotment looks fab anyway. 🙂 Thanks for reading

On the other hand, things might get totally out of hand on unicorn poo. Like C S Lewis’s trees that danced, the runners might, well, do a runner 🙂

Haha! Lovely idea. There’s definitely a children’s story in that idea, Tish 🙂

LOL! Whether it is unicorn poo or not – whatever it is is popping gold! Cute story!

At least it is gold and not bodies. Some people are watching too much ID tv.

Haha! Yes. Always tempting to shovel a body in when there’s mud to be found 🙂 Thanks for reading Jessica

Great story. And this line: Taking off his flat cap, Colin smoothed down his sweat soaked hair. ‘
That’s the line I was searching for and it ever came! Nice writing.

I agree! Great descriptions and mystery. My favorite line is: They stood side by side, watching the easy bend and stretch of Norm’s back as he picked glossy runner beans from the vines.

Ha, have you ever watched or heard the Twilight Zone “Free Dirt”…that’s where I thought you were going at first. 🙂

We used to get the Twilight Zone here, yes – in fact I was bemoaning the loss of programmes like this to another blogger the other day.
I didn’t know that episode but just looked it up – intriguing 🙂 My head did go towards the dead, but thought someone else might do it (and they did – probably better than I could too!)
Love a bit of mystery sparkle 🙂

Audible.com has the audio collections of TZ. I like them better than the tele versions, actually. I also found some thru our local library’s online stuff…part of a program called Hoopla. Not sure if it’s available outside the US.

I saw some had been made into radio broadcasts for the Beeb but couldn’t find how to listen to them as they were quite old. I’ll take a look, Casey. Thanks for the tip 🙂

A well written descriptive piece all round, with flat caps, allotments, and reeking, unicorn poo. That’s not to mention the intriguing mention of gold. Great characterisation and dialogue, Lynn. 🙂

Thank you Millie. Love writing that dialogue – characters feel much more real when you can get them to speak, don’t they? Thanks so much for reading and commenting 🙂
