FFfAW: For a pair of crinkly eyes

This week’s photo prompt is provided by Yinglan. Thank you Yinglan for our photo prompt!

‘Nice one, Tom.’ Annie’s feet were perished, like she had frozen fish fingers in her boots instead of toes. ‘Good … cross.’

Was she saying the right thing? Tom looked the other way every time he ran past her, so she guessed she was making a fool of herself. Truth was, she knew more about quantum physics than she knew about football and what she knew about both she could etch on a grain of rice.

But since his dad left, Tom needed someone to shout for him. Even if that someone was clueless.

‘Hi. You’re Tom’s mum, Annie, right?’ He was tall, attractive in a crinkly-eyed way.

‘Err.’

Crinkly Eyes smiled. ‘I’m Carl. Tom’s new coach.’

‘Oh, hi.’

‘You’re very … enthusiastic.’

Suddenly all of her felt warm, even the fish finger toes.

‘Maybe I could tell you what’s going on in the game?’ Another crinkly smile.

Annie wondered if he knew much about quantum physics.

  1. Here’s hoping Annie gets a chance to tell him all about quantum physics… over dinner, perhaps. 🙂 Nice hopeful story Lynn, especially for those of us still looking for Mr. Crinkly Eyes. 😉

    1. You need to hang around football matches more, Joy 🙂 I love crinkly eyes – not sure what it is about them. Someone who clearly smiles a lot is always attractive, I guess. Thanks for reading 🙂

      1. Although hanging around football matches, seems like I’d meet men who wanted to spend time at football matches, and I’m not that big on sports. Maybe I should hang around… bookstores?

      2. Well, there are plenty of book shops with cafes you could hang out in. The danger might be finding a book that’s too good and being too absorbed to notice someone trying to flirt. Good idea though. People must do that, right?

      3. We still have a couple of big shops in Bristol and both have cafes to draw people in. I find it hard to believe our cultures can’t support bookshops – depressing too.

  2. Good story, I liked that Annie was there for her son even though she didn’t know what was going on! And she might have got a happy ending out of it too. Best, Iain

    1. Thank you, love. I think your right about the eyes- crinkly from smiling is a very attractive thing. Crinkly from too many late, drunk-fuelled nights … Not so much 🙂
