Three Line Tales : Someone more interesting

She found the first flag the day after she moved into the new house, when her things were still boxed and labelled and the rooms still smelled of other people. EXPLORE it read, black ink bleeding into the fabric as it hung limply from its twig flagpole.

It didn’t worry her – something about the forced nature of the move, the rush and mess, made her wonder if she’d owned it all along and had merely forgotten. So many things emerged from the crates and boxes – a depressed looking fox fur stole, a Nativity set with a crib but missing a Jesus, a set of bowling pins carved and painted to resemble Russian babushka dolls – that she wondered if her things had been swapped with those belonging to someone better travelled, more interesting, less … suburban.

On her third day in the house she woke with the blackbirds and scuffed down the narrow stairs to make tea. Across the living room doorway were pinned two more flags –

THE

CELLAR

  1. What a creepy mystery! I love how you set it up, with that very believable disorientation that comes with moving, luring us into the mundane before dropping the floor out from under us. Although my first take was that there was something very sinister going on, I immediately second-guessed myself: if there’s something sinister in the cellar, why would it warn her? Or why would someone else encourage her down there? Might be it’s something mysterious and weird, but of the fabulous-magical variety. 🙂

    1. You could be right Joy. I think if it was wholly bad, whatever it was was be cleverer than this, would lure instead of tell her. Could be something different entirely … Thanks for reading and the kind comment

  2. This is so good Lynn, I love the assortment of things from the crate…interesting and strange too when combined. I get why it may feel creepy but there is something innocent and optimistic about that flag, I don’t think it would creep me out, but I might need to get someone to come with me to explore the cellar…just in case…:)

    1. Thank you! Yes, I think you’re right that the flag doesn’t necessarily men anything bad is going to happen, though it is a huge mystery that needs to be solved. And cellars are pretty creepy anyway, so there’s no way I’d go down there alone – mysterious messages or not! Thanks for reading 🙂

      1. The best cellars are just that – dark, cold, with lots of places to hide … and a supernatural being hidden under the Christmas decorations box. Thank you for reading 🙂
