What pegman saw : How to survive the cold

2017-01-31

Hammerfest, Norway

The clapboard cottage she’d rented huddled in the lee of the mountain, the harbour below a pewter disk under the shifting clouds.

‘Is this all you’ve brought with you?’ Anders eyed Ginny’s wheelie case. ‘You know it gets very cold here in the winter?’

Being a cause for concern for anyone – even a taxi driver – moved her almost to tears.

‘I’ll be fine,’ she said, lifting the case to the kitchen table. ‘I can buy warm clothes here, right?’

He smiled, nodding. ‘Long underwear and Akevitt – that’s how to survive the cold. Camilla left some on the side for you.’ He pointed to the amber coloured bottle. ‘Akevitt, not underwear.’ He chuckled at his own joke.

He was soon gone in a flurry of ‘goodbyes’ and ‘thank yous’, leaving Ginny alone.

In a few days, the snow would start to fall – thick and heavy and isolating.

Would it be isolating enough?

    1. I agree, it’s a portal into something else or feels it could be…must be fun Lynn starting all these proverbial sand castles you put up, and then they get taken down, and you put up more…ha…I love the minute reality of this one in particular, though. Amazing how much you can conjure with so little, as I’ve said before. I say that as ‘you’ the writer and also us, the Greater You, these lush scenes.

      1. Thank you, Bill. Yes, I like this one – using the details of a scene as a way into the subtext and back story. It is fun, setting up all of these scenes, though slightly frustrating I don’t have the time to extend something further. Thanks so much for reading 🙂

  1. Ah, i sense someone whose heart is broken, trying to hide from the demands of the real world. I hope this is like those small town romance movies I like, where soon she’ll get wrapped up in the odd habits of the quirky locals and realize she’s found her true home.
