What pegman saw : The calm between two storms

The rain stopped on the seventh day, the black veil of cloud that hung snare-like over the village giving way to blue skies and feathery cirrus.

Vitor sat on the balcony staring across the river, cigarillo clamped between yellowed teeth, smoke caressing his face. Behind him, the door banged open then shut.

‘It’s time.’ Enzo’s voice was tight, higher than usual.

Vitor raised his hand, waved the cigarillo.

Sighing, Enzo snatched it from his fingers, dragged over a crate to sit beside him. ‘I want to get it over.’

‘You need to be sharp, but calm or you’ll make mistakes.’ He could feel the boy stiffen, offended by the slur.

‘I won’t -‘

Vitor shrugged. ‘We all do.’

They gazed across the spiralling water, watched a harpy eagle soar and dip over the walking palms.

Finally, Vitor stirred. ‘Go fetch him. And make sure he’s blindfolded.’

    1. Spot on, Iain! Exactly what I had in mind when I wrote it. I imagine a lot of kidnappings are performed by the ramshackle and inexperienced. Thanks so much for reading 🙂

  1. ouuu, what evil lurks in the hearts of man… I hear the opening to the old radio program “The Shadow”. Indeed, what evil is lurking here. Well told. filled with suspense.

  2. Great tension, and great glimpse into these characters. Definitely an ominous feel, although I seem to have interpreted it differently. The phrase “fetch him” made me think that they already had the “him”, not that they were going to now go kidnap him. My first thought was that they were going to execute him, but then I cheered myself up by imagining they were going to do a hostage exchange, and maybe the “him” would get home safely after all — if Enzo doesn’t make any mistakes, at least. Okay, still ominous, but I feel a little better. 🙂

    1. That was exactly my thinking – ‘he’ was already a hostage and they’re going to take him to the exchange. Hopefully everyone will keep their heads and all will be well. Thanks so much for reading and your thoughtful comment 🙂
